In June of 2018, Muggs Helin made a bold decision that would forever change the trajectory of her retirement. After stepping away from her career as a Nurse Practitioner, she quickly realized that she wasn’t ready for the quiet life of retirement. What she missed most was the daily satisfaction that came from helping people and having a meaningful purpose.
“I always dreamed of running my own business,” Muggs shared. “Throughout my career in the medical field, I envisioned owning something like a coffee shop or a boutique. But once I retired, that idea felt like more of a time commitment than I wanted. Plus, my husband and I had started spending half our time at our home in California, near our daughter and her family, and the other half in Wisconsin. So, I needed something more flexible.”
That flexibility led her to Equis Financial, where her son Jeff, a Regional Manager, was already thriving. Looking for something to fill her time, Muggs asked Jeff if she could help with any administrative work. “I started doing some administrative tasks for Jeff, but I found myself wanting more,” she said. That desire to stay busy and contribute led her to get her insurance license and begin selling insurance part-time.
To Muggs’ surprise, her early experiences in selling insurance were incredibly positive. “Those early wins gave me the confidence to keep going,” she said. As time went on, she started to envision how much further she could go.
Fast forward to the summer of 2023, and Muggs found herself on the brink of another exciting change. Jeff and his family moved back to Madison, Wisconsin, with the purpose of opening a brick-and-mortar office. Muggs and Jeff both believed that having a physical office would bring legitimacy to their growing business. “We felt that if we wanted to truly grow, we needed a space where we could evolve with industry changes and bring new agents in for training,” Muggs explained.
Working side by side with her son has been an incredibly rewarding experience for Muggs. “I love learning from Jeff and growing this business with him. Moving into the office changed my whole mindset. Now, I’m in full business-building mode.”
Muggs’ dedication and hard work haven’t gone unnoticed. In 2024, she was honored as the recipient of Equis Financial’s Core Value Award for Respect—a reflection of her unwavering commitment to treating others with kindness and integrity.
“I’ve never done anything halfway,” Muggs said with pride. “This business has given me the chance to reap the rewards of my hard work. My success and income are directly tied to the effort I put in, and the best part is that I’m helping people protect their families in the process. It’s truly a win-win.”
As she continues to grow her business with Equis, Muggs remains as dedicated as ever. “I want to make this business as successful as possible,” she said. And with her passion, determination, and respect for those around her, there’s no doubt that Muggs is well on her way to achieving her goals.
At Equis Financial, we’re proud to have Muggs as part of our team, and we’re excited to see all the incredible things she’ll continue to accomplish.
